Built in 1868; Kylemore Abbey is now home to the Irish Benedictine Nuns but visitors can enjoy the beautiful gardens and there is a restaurant and craft shop. There are many fine beaches in the area such as the well-known beach; Dog's Bay and Gurteen Bay. The Irish speaking Aran Islands are well worth a day trip. The islands have a rich ancient history and can be reached by a short ferry crossing from Rossaveal on the Connemara coast.
