The Dingle Peninsula is an area of unparalleled natural beauty and there is a coastal drive of around 40 km which takes in the major sights. Dingle town is a thriving fishing port and popular tourist destination with brightly coloured buildings housing a variety of craft shops and cafes. Visitors can take a boat trip from the harbour to see Fungi the dolphin; Dingle's most famous resident. A short drive from Dingle is the Gallarus Oratory. This miniature church is shaped like an upturned boat and is believed to be the oldest Christian church in Ireland. Just past Slea Head; the Blasket Centre explains the culture; language and way of life of the Blasket Islanders who moved back to the mainland as late as 1953. Further along the coast Ballyferriter is a pleasant village with pastel coloured houses and famous pottery. For ancient monuments; there is the monastic settlement at Riasc and Kilmalkedar whose graveyard contains primitive pagan stones; cross and sundial.
