Roscommon is a bustling market town with much to offer visitors. There are two 13th century buildings in the town; the Dominican Friary and Roscommon Castle; both or which have connections to the ancient Kings of Connaught. Many of the walls of the castle remain. Further afield; Clonalis House in Castlerea is a Victorian manor house built on the site of the ancestral home of one of the last High Kings of Ireland. The gardens of the current house contain the ruins of a 17th century house an an inauguration stone dating from 90BC. The interior of the house is a fine example of high Victorian decoration complete with a gallery of family portraits. Stokestown Park House is County Roscommon's largest Palladian mansion and visitors can tour the house and gardens. It is also home to the Famine Museum which commemorates the famine of 1840 through the use of archive material from both tenants and landlords.
