Walking the Connemara Way > View Galway articles
While at Connemara, Co. Galway, an obvious choice to tour around the place is through walking. For this, the Connemara Way serves best. The trail will take walkers to the finest places in West Galway. It passes along the most scenic parts of the county with bleak glens, roughly steep mountains, and impressive loughs.

The Connemara Way comprises a lengthy route. This is usually done for 8 days stopping over at spectacular and sometimes historical spots. Walkers can rest on some excellent hotels and accommodations along the way. This is ideal to regain lost strength and energy and revitalize for the next day of walking.

The Connemara way starts at the charming village of Leenane at the head of Killary Harbour. This is oftentimes quoted as the “Gateway to Connemara”. It also abounds in varied geological formations that are worth an exploration. The walk will be along the shores of Killary Harbour. The old famine road built by the Irishmen during the Great Famine of the 18th century will be trekked on. While walking along the road, tourists can catch sight of some significant historical remains plus the magnificent view of the bald grey hill called Mweelrea. This mountain is actually the highest point in Co. Mayo and Connacht.

The road leads through the enthralling Lough Inagh Valley situated between the Twelve Bens and the Maumturk Mountains. The Inagh Valley offers views second to none. The surrounding mountains provide an unsurpassed walking scene here.

The way continues to Mam Ean Pass. This is a popular pilgrimage destination particularly for St, Patrick. From here, the way heads on to Maam Valley. Then from here, walkers will be led to the Oughterard.

There are guided walking tours offering the Connemara Way. Duration of walk may vary but the attractions remain the same. Walking the Connemara Way is both thrilling and exciting. Tourists are taken to settings which may have appeared only in literary descriptions. The views are matchless and the rewarding feel is incomparable.

Looking for a grand way to spend your vacation at Connemara, Co. Galway? Indulge in a walking adventure along the Connemara Way – this is where you will find an in-depth solitude and belongingness to nature.
