There are several walking routes that display the breathtaking scenery of the county. The routes may introduce some challenges but the experience is totally gratifying. When you walk in Co. Kerry, it pays to wander your sight on the enthralling surrounding.
The North Kerry Way or what the Irish termed as the “Sli Chiarraí Thuaidh” is a 48 km way marked route that goes along the charming town of Tralee, Co. Kerry and all the way to the equally appealing village of Ballyheigue. The entire route passes along exquisite panoramas and with the view of the grand Atlantic Ocean as premier backdrop. The route begins at Denny Street, Tralee, and then continues to Spa. Along the way, walkers pass through the Town Park and Blennerville. From Spa, the way marked route heads on to Ballyheigue surpassing Banna and a remarkable beach. The walking trail circumvents the hills of Kerry and then back to Ballyheigue.
The North Kerry Way is regarded as rather a lengthy walkway to traverse on. Yet, it also holds a reputation as one of the walkways with unrivaled scenic and visual attractions. With a length of 48 km or approximately 29 miles, the North Kerry Way may be divided into sections to complete the entire route through a feet journey.
Another long distance walking route in Co. Kerry is the Dingle Way. The walking route – which is entirely signposted – goes around the Dingle peninsula, passing along enthralling beaches, breathtaking cliffs and hedged livestock paths. The total length of the route is 179 km which may take several days to complete. What makes walking along the Dingle Way a truly rewarding and exciting activity is the fact that it offers diverse attractions. The surrounding scenery will hold you captivated and the archaeological sites along the route will amaze and enlighten you.
The Dingle Way sets off at Blennerville and halts at Slea Head. On the course of the trail, the charming villages of Camp, Annascaul and Dingle are passed. Basically, the route encompasses several quaint villages, with Tralee and Dingle as the major component. Walking along the Dingle Way may be a leisure activity to some but for most, it is a rewarding challenge. The walk is heightened when walkers reach the foot of Mount Brandon.
The Dingle Peninsula also offers the Pilgrim’s Route for interested walkers. The route encompasses an area of distinct beauty and unsurpassed surrounding festooned with timeless Christian sites to explore. It is a 48km walk that starts off at Dingle, and then goes on until it reach Ventry. From Ventry, walkers are guided to take on the north side and head on to Riasc. From here, walkers are taken to the Kilmalkedar Church along the Saints Road. The route continues until it reaches Cloghane.
