The Twelve Bens of Galway > View Galway articles
The “Na Beanna Beola”, as the Irish put it, is a matchless and unspoiled mountain range along the Connemara region in Co. Galway. The view, even from a distance, is spectacular and unparalleled. The Twelve Bens or the Twelve Pins is an added attraction to the original and all-natural charm of Connemara.

The mountains comprising the Twelve Bens do not have remarkable sizes. They are rather small – though this seems to be an advantage. Due to its size, the mountains have become well-hiked areas especially during a fine weather. Amazingly, these mountains were given names – and certain enough there is no need to commit them to memory. But for the benefit of all, the names are: Binn Bhán (Benbaun), Binn Chorr (Bencorr), Binn Dubh (Bencollaghduff), Binn Bhraoin, Binn Doire Chláir (Derryclare), Binn Gabhar (Ben Gower), Meacanach, Binn Fraoigh, An Chailleach, Binn Breac (Benbrack), Binn Leitrí (Benlettery), and the Binn Glean Uisce (Benglenisky). The names in the parentheses are actually the Anglicized terms for the mountains.

The Twelve Bens is a popular destination of fell runners and hill runners. The area is an excellent spot to run and to race along the inclined spots. To partake in this form of challenging activity, it is well recommended that runners be completely equipped with necessary safety gears.

These magnificent arrays of mountains are also ideal for an exhilarating walk. This is included along the Western Way or the Connemara Way, which is popular for tourists and serious walkers. The backdrop view it offers is unsurpassed and the soothing calmness is second to none. The Twelve Bens is undoubtedly a point of excitement in the Western Route.

This spectacular natural appeal in Connemara has earned numerous praises from tourists who have already experienced it. It wouldn’t be a focal spot of interest here for nothing, right? There are more to expect from the Twelve Bens, in terms of picture-perfect views.

Traveling to Co. Galway? Grab a camera because along the way the perfect and impressive sight of the Twelve Bens will welcome you. And you would not want to miss it for sure.
