The Rose of Tralee Festival took its name from a famous love song of the 19th century composed by William Mulchinock. The song has a very romantic origin that adds up to the excitement of the festival. History reveals that William fell in love with a maid. Being in a high social status himself, William has moved to another place under his clan’s pressure. Upon his return, his beloved has already died of tuberculosis. The tragic ending for his love interest has inspired him to come up with the “Rose of Tralee” song.
To date, the Rose of Tralee is more than just a song to make you fall in love. It is now an international festival that has grown as a big event to look forward to. A proof of the growing popularity of the Rose of Tralee Festival is the criteria given to the potential “Roses”. During its first years, the Search for the Rose requires contestants to be a native of Tralee, then it became a Kerry native and now it has expanded to Irish natives – a proof that countless women wants to be the rose!
