The Mystery of Cork City Gaol > View Cork articles
Cork City Gaol is the ultimate destination of history interested tourists. This heritage site is merely 2 km away from Cork town center near the Sunday Well. First time visitors might mistake it as a castle but this is not a royal palazzo in any sense. This is a prison house used to shelter a number of famous inmates. Co. Cork’s tourists are welcome to visit the site any time of the day and all throughout the year.

The location of the Cork City Gaol now is not actually the original area preference. The favored setting was once the Distillery Field. The eventual shift of decision was affected by the fact that the initial choice was prone to recurrent flooding.

The architectural structure of Cork City Gaol garnered a number of appreciation form style-inclined tourists. It made use of the medieval Georgian-Gothic approach giving it an illusion of a castle rather than a prison. The big H is what visitors will see if it is viewed on the top.

Since the construction of this prison shelter in 1824, it has housed all different kinds of inmates, from simple offenders to criminals. It originally accepted a combination of men and women convicts but later on it became the city’s women prison. It was also used as a prison house for Republican prisoners during the Civil War. The gaol was closed after the republican detainees batch.

Today, anyone can visit the Cork City Gaol even without committing a criminal offense. This was opened for the public to relive and understand the history behind this building. Educational tours are also catered by this site.

The mere facade of the gaol already depicts the 19th century era. Visitors can see the yard which was once an exercise ground for inmates. In the entrance, visitors can see some life-size replicas of what actually happened on this place years ago. The stocks that hold the prisoners who are being flogged are a bit spine-thrilling to some.

The cells which are of Victorian blocks can now be seen with human size figures showing varied situations. There is a female inmate sleeping on her rough and wooden bed. A mother nursing her baby while inside the prison cell. A male prisoner eating his share of little victuals. All these figures seem to be really alive and tourists just love the whole display in the Cork City Gaol.

Unlock the mystery of this historical gaol. Travel back to the time where the society was still unstable. Do this and more at Co. Cork, Ireland and specifically in Cork City Gaol.
