Some mystical touch on a particular location adds to the thrill of the place. It supplements the natural enticement of the setting. As a general fact, the more a certain place is whimsical, the more it lures visitors to come.
There are some magical stories behind the beauty and magnificence of the River Barrow. It is certainly up to you as to what extent you would like to believe them.
The term Barrow was derived from the word “Beirigh” which means boiling. You may have wondered why it is called “boiling” when it does not literally. The quest for answer will lead you to a lore told through the power of the imaginative minds that attempt to explain everything about anything.
It was believed – or told might be the right term – that there was a certain king of the Tuatha De’ Danann (race from Danu), who was once strolling his way along the river when he happened to see a weird looking creature that appears to be a baby. Fearing this unusual being will be a threat to himself and his entire clan, he ended its life by taking out the heart.
And as real magical stories go, there is a sudden twist as the story continues. The heart revealed three deadly serpents eager to avenge their master. As what anyone will do in this situation, the king slain the venom-armed creatures. He burned them with the thought that they might still be alive. After this fantasy-rich encounter, he threw the ashes on the river. Having some mystical aspects, the ashes caused the river to boil, thereby, killing every living being on it. Thus, the term Barrow.
This may sound too quirky to believe but it is what makes this place mystically interesting. The next time you get to cruise the River Barrow, you may like the idea of touching the water – see if it is hot or boiling. Then you might be happy to recall the bizarre encounter of the king with the serpents. Who knows, you might as well uncover more relevant remnants that will prove this tale?
