Westport forms part of Co. Mayo’s list of towns and villages. The town is oftentimes referred to as the “city of the beeves”, taken from its Irish translation, Cathair na Mart. Westport’s festive spirit continues to July with the Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage taking place on the last Sunday of the month. The Arts Festival dominates the second two weeks of September while October celebrates the Westport Seafood Festival. The first week of November is set for the Westport Wellness Week Festival. All these festivals are unique on their own, thus, each is an event not to forget.

One thing that makes Westport stands out is the fact that it is a planned town. Well, thanks to James Wyatt, an English architect who planned the town’s layout as commissioned by Lord Sligo. The highlight of the lay out is “The Mall”, a tree-lined boulevard.
