Co. Carlow in Ireland could trace back its roots since the beginning of the New Stone Age. It has a number of traces that could somehow prove how this county has undergone this stage of evolution.
You may have heard or read about some prehistoric monuments of two or more upright stones set to support a horizontal stone slab. These stone structures are called Dolmen which are always connected with tombs. Co. Carlow takes pride in its amazing dolmens that has made their own marks in terms of attractiveness and splendor. Aside from their charisma, these dolmens are rich in historical significances as well.
I would strongly suggest you take some of your precious time to have a look at the Browne’s Hill Dolmen. This is said to be the interment place of local kings of the early eras. What makes this site exceptional is the stone that covers it. It is well thought-out to be the largest of its kind in Europe. And believe me when I say it weighs an incredible 100 metric tons. For better appreciation of the way it looks at the moment, I might as well point out that this enormous stone was once laid horizontally on top of the two walls supporting the sides of the dolmen. However, it would not be a matter of surprise that the smaller stones below will not be able to support the weight of the slab. So what actually happened was that the left wall has collapsed, thereby, the dolmen appears as it is now. Still, it’s an amazing site to visit and enjoy.
Paving your own way to Haroldstown, throw Haroldstown Dolmen a visit. Almost similar as the Browne’s Hill Dolmen, this tomb is of megalithic structure as well. This portal tomb is considered to be one of Ireland’s attractive dolmens. What sets this tomb apart from the others is its interesting past background. A family once lived on this exact site as early as the 19th century. The proof to this historical bit is the size of the dolmen which is way bigger than an average portal tomb, Bring your whole family over and together be amazed by this historical stones structure.
It is just so amazing how an ordinary stone weathered by history has come to lure people from all over the world. How would you like the idea of being a part of history itself? It is never impossible if you decide to visit these dolmens in Co. Carlow, Ireland.
