How would you like the idea of cramming yourself in an island beyond the usual trips? If this sounds interesting to you, then the place for you is the Skellig Experience Center. To start off, get yourself to Valentia Island – 11km off the western sector of Ring of Kerry.
The Skellig Experience Center has on display some significant models and replicas of the enchanting and mysterious Skellig Islands. This island is actually composed of two islands: Skellig Michael and Little Island. These two islands both have an unrivaled and undisturbed nature attraction, aside from being a natural paradise for birdlife. The original island is magnificently lying on the Ivereagh Peninsula at about 16km to the west of Bolus Head.
The Skellig Islands are known to be a natural bird sanctuary. The Little Island is in fact considered as home of Ireland’s largest gannet colony. It is believed to house at least 20,000 pairs of these large seabirds. The Skellig Expereince Center gives its guests the amazing opportunity to experience these birdlife both visually and auditory.
The Skellig Michael is recognized as an unmatched heritage site in terms of monastic settlement and remnants that are believed to have a history that dates back as far as the 7th century. The Skellig Experience Center relives the old days of these monks including their way of life, their activities and the way they have excellently made the island as their home.
The center also recreated the Skellig lighthouse. Formerly an indispensable assistance to mariners, today, the lighthouse is a remarkable tourist attraction in the center. Some notable still images of what to explore on the Skellig underwater can also be enjoyed in the center. There is a video presentation to supplement the photographs.
The Skellig Experience Center also offers a sea cruise on the Skellig Islands for those who crave for more exploration. There is also a School Tour Cruise that is known as the “glimpse of the Skelligs and a touch of the ocean”. This is merely a 45-minute cruise passing along the Illaunloughan, Long island and Bray Head.
Need to prove you’ve been here? Well, the center’s retail area will prove best for you! Bring home a keepsake or a book that will make you remember how excellent your experience in the Skellig Experience Center has been. And don’t be selfish – tell your friends what await them here so they, too, will experience the same!
