Want to try something original and at the same time educational on your vacation? An exploration of County Kerry might just suffice your interest. The “kingdom”, not only takes pride in its superb location being the best of both worlds – the mountains and the plains; but it also boasts of rich cultural and historical heritage. Evidences to this richness of history are captured in the county’s museums. There are about five museums in Co. Kerry which are worth going to.
The Chorca Dhuibne Regional Museum is known to be the place where archeology and history are brought to life. One of the prized treasures at the Chorca, is the 18th century old soup pot which was used during the time of the Great Hunger. For an added convenience there is an Irish and English exhibition installed in the museum. It interprets the relevance of the displays to the rich cultural heritage of Co. Kerry. There is also a book translation of the exhibition for the French, German and Norwegian.
Get a taste of the one and only Irish coffee at the Red Fox in Bog Village. But not only that, you can also look at a 19th century old blacksmith forge and thatched cottages. You would’ve guessed that the place to go is the Kerry Bog Village Museum. Located on the lovely “Ring of Kerry”, this is a must stopover spot. With samples of 18th century turf cutter’s house, stable dwelling and thatcher’s house, this place will surely give you a taste of the past.
When you think it is time to get real first hand experience, then its time you get yourself to the Geraldine Tralee. Rotate your clock back to the year 1450, and literally be able to smell, hear and see the views of the medieval life as you travel in a time car machine. Avail of this one-of-a-kind thrill at the County Kerry Museum. Artifacts dating back as early as the Late Mesolithic periods to the Bronze Age are well preserved and kept in this well-visited museum.
Even if you are not a car fanatic, you will surely be amazed at the fabulous collection of transport gadgets in the Museum of Irish Transport. Ever seen an 1898 Benz? How about a luxurious 1904 Belgian Germain? Aside from the cars on flaunt, you can also glance at bicycles, fire engines, sparkling plugs and the list goes on. See for yourselves and discover what other valuables are stored in the museum.
If you are thirsty for unique and rare vehicles, you will definitely be quenched at the Kilgarvan Motor Museum, home to a wide range of vintage and classical cars. The display of Rolls Royce, Bentley, Alvis and Austin is a private colletion of the Mitchell’s. Even if you cannot own one of the cars on display, at least you’ve seen them in real.
All of these, you can get in one time visit at the Co. Kerry. So go ahead, relax and learn while on your holiday trip only at Co. Kerry.
