Co. Limerick lies impressively on the mid-west point of Ireland. The county’s points of pride are its countless charms and limitless offers of enjoyment. It is bordered by some of the most spectacular counties of Ireland. To its north rests the scenic Co, Clare; to its south lies the highly visited Co. Cork; to its west is the vibrant Co. Co. Limerick’s name means “the flat area” as derived from the Irish term, Luimneach. True to this, Limerick abounds in fertile limestone plains; however, there are also a number of hills scattered around the area. The Rivers Mulkear, Maigue, Deale and Feale runs through the county. These rivers all streams from the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river.

The towns that comprise the entire Limerick County include Limerick City, Abbeyfaele, Adare, Askeaton, Athea, Athlacca, Ballingarry, Broadford, Bruff, Cappamore, Castleconnell, Croom, Dromcolliher, Foynes, Garryspillane, Hospital, Kilmakkock, Likteely-Dromkeen, Mountcollins, Newcastlewest, Oola, Patrickswell, Pallasgreen, Rathkeale and Tuarnafola. Among these villages, Newcastlewest is regarded as the county town while Limerick City is the county seat of Co. Limerick.

These towns have their own unique characters and distinctive tourist charms. Abbeyfaele is a bustling market town in Limerick with a rich history worth discovering. Adare is the must-go town for an array of heritage sites including a castle, abbey and historical churches. Another historic town in Co. Limerick is Askeaton with its 1389 century Franciscan Friary and 1199 castle plus loads of historical sites everywhere in the town. Ballingarry is for the nature buffs as this town is regarded as the Town of the Gardens. Foynes is a significant town in Co. Limerick as it serves as a major port in the county. The Newcastlewest is the largest town in Limerick – excluding the Limerick City. This town has excellently preserved heritage spots and a vibrant pace of lifestyle.

Co. Limerick has countless appeals that have lured numerous tourists from all parts of the world. There are several museums all around the county including the Hunt Museum and Foynes museum. The county abounds in a number of heritage sites and centers, as well. Few to mention are Desmond Hall in Newcastle, Croom Mills and Heritage Center, and the Lough Gur Stone Age Center. There are exquisite gardens set on the county – Curraghmore Forest Park to mention one.

There are excellent opportunities to indulge in rousing activities while at Co. Limerick, Ireland. The River Shannon and the Shannon Estuary plus a number of lakes in Limerick serve well for angling activities. There are excellent cycling and walking routes to follow here, as well. Equestrian enthusiasts can take delight at an impressive number of equestrian centers available at Limerick. Excellent tee times can be enjoyed at the county’s finest golf courses and links.
