Keeping the Ould Lammas Fair's Spirit > View Antrim articles
Co. Antrim has a number of festivals celebrated all throughout the year. We could probably imply that this county is full of enjoyment and fun. One worth including yourself in is the Ould Lammas Fair celebrated annually on the last Monday and Tuesday of August. For a number of centuries now, this fair has been well celebrated. Just a bit of fact for you, this fair is considered to be one the oldest fairs in Ireland. Traditionally, it was believed that this fair originated from a certain Sorley Boy MacDonell. But legends – as we all know Ireland has a great load of this – state another foundation that has something to do with the sun god. Whatever is true, the fact remains that we can all enjoy this fair at this moment.

Basically, this fair is celebrated to mark the end of the summer season and welcome the beginning of harvest season. This explains why it is a tradition to offer fruits and flowers during the entire celebration. Certainly, this is the way Irish people revere the bountiful season that is to come.

Two very popular terms that mark this festival are “Yellowman” and “Dulse”. The first is an edible seaweed dried to crispiness while the latter is a sticky, yellow-colored stuff to eat. Dulse has a purple color and tastes really salty. You surely would love to have a taste of this fair’s highlight.

Would you believe that this fair has inspired John Henry MacAuley, a well renowned fiddle player to compose a ballad especially created for Ould Lammas Fair? It is just so great how this fair came to be a phenomenal celebration in Co. Antrim. This has lured so many tourists to come and participate in this joyous celebration. Surely you won’t consider missing out the fun this festival offers.

A perfect suggestion would be to keep your schedule free this August and visit Co. Antrim just in time for the Ould Lammas Fair. Bring your friends and family over to Antrim and get a load of Dulse and Yellowman. One thing for sure, you will come back the next year.
