Historical Castles - In Honor of Galway's Past > View Galway articles
Co. Galway is steep in history and as such, it has left its historical mark on some of its heritage structures including castles. There are quite several fortresses to explore in Galway. The significance they bear is timeless. You can take some time to visit these castles and learn more about the past of Galway.

Derryhivenny Castle. This fortress was built in 1643 and situated north of Portumna. It has stood a number of battles in the area. To date, tourists can explore what remained of this once majestic castle. The mullioned windows, the spyhole, a fireplace, the hinge stone or the hanging eye and the chimneypots can still be viewed – though they aren’t appear as they used to be.

Dunmore Castle. Head on to Dunmore, Co. Galway for an intensive exploration of this castle. This is a typical 14th century structure lying impressively on a scenic surrounding. The castle’s glory and architectural splendor has been weathered by time and existence. What to see now are some of the relevant remnants including some traces of the stairway and a fireplace.

Ardamullivan Castle. This is a five-storey tower lying 8 km south of Gort, Co. Galway. Its history dates back as far as the 16th century. As it was a common thing to make the castles fortified and secure, the Ardamullivan Castle was bordered by a defensive wall. Now, tourists can enjoy this castle not for its original purpose but as a national monument.

Feartagar Castle. Also called the “Castlegrove”, this is a must-visit castle for a feel of the 16th century. This is also regarded as the Jenning’s Castle due to its settlers. This is a fine example of a four-storey Irish tower house which is vaulted on the first floor. The castle is surrounded with a spectacular setting making a trip to it a truly remarkable one not only in terms of historical appeal but also due to its exquisite panorama.

Iserrkelly Castle. This fortress is an archetypal 16th century tower house nestled majestically at Loughrea, Co. Galway. One focal point of interest here is the fireplace on the second floor bearing an inscription that the builder be preserved from all evil – this is the English translation since the original is in Latin.

Oranmore Castle. Once a fortified abode of a prominent clan in Galway, the Oranmore Castle is now one of the many historical castles worth a visit in Galway. Located in Oranmore, this fortress has a foundational past around the 15th century.

These sites are surviving evidences of Co. Galway’s royalty and eminence. It bears out this county’s past and remarkable points of history. Come and enjoy Galway in the early centuries as you visit these castles.
