Athenry is a famed medieval town in Galway. In all of Ireland, it is the only walled town whose walls are still intact and clearly visible to the approaching visitor. Here resides a lovely dwelling since 12th century named after the town itself, the Athenry Castle.
Known to be a castle inside a castle, this stronghold consists of a towering three-storey keep surrounded by the outer walls of the palace itself. Recently restored by the Office of the Public Works, the castle still stands with its original designs. Upon your entrance, you will pass through a finely arched door. A grand staircase will lead the visitors upstairs to the second and third towers.
Along with the restoration of the castle, is the bringing in of the audio visual room and exhibition room specially designed to be a welcoming comfort zone for anyone who visits. As part of the guided tour in the castle, you will be led to this room and you will be able to view the history behind the castle together with other important points of the town’s past. Facilities include a car park and a special access to the ground floor for the handicapped.
Lavishly built to suit the elegant taste of its wealthy builder, the Portumna Castle has been a favorite subject of historians and archeologists. You will be able to find this magnificent abode surrounded by similarly fascinating local attractions at the appealing town of Portumna, Galway.
The palace speaks a lot of its owner’s aspirations of high position and power. You will come into this threshold through a sophisticated doorway and enter its innermost courtyards through a Tuscan gateway. Above all, the prevailing theme for the architectural structure is renaissance. Like the Athenry Castle, this symmetrically-shaped palace is also composed of three stories of towers. Unlike the Athenry Castle, however, the Portumna Castle contains numerous fireplaces. It is also here that you can visit a 17th century styled kitchen garden planted with fruit trees, flowers, herbs and vegetables. All of these feature of the Portumna caslte work together to make it a very aesthetic palace.
These castles have been amazingly amusing people from the past to the present. Be one of the many who fell enchanted by these fortresses. All you have to do is get yourself to Co. Galway, Ireland.
