O’Donnell’s Castle, which is more popularly known today as Donegal Castle, is one of the many appeals that Donegal offers its tourists. It is strategically situated at the heart of the equally historical, Donegal town. This ancient fortress lies beside the River Eske making it a picture perfect destination.
Donegal Castle is a historical fortress with beginnings as early as the 15th century. It was built in 1505 by the O’ Donnell family, a ruling clan of those times. This has been a mighty and famed fortress due to its remarkable structure. It is a rectangular tower built on a good foundation. In fact, a number of old writings mentioned this castle’s remarkable glory and reputation.
After years of serving the O’Donnell’s family, the castle was transferred to Captain Basil Brooke’s possession. Captain Brooke added excellent 17th century details on this castle, thereby, giving it 15th and 17th century merged styles.
This castle still shows off its 15th century style with some additional Jacobean style wing. The latter is comprised of renaissance architecture famous in England. Tourists who tour Donegal Castle can still view the great architectural product of this fortress.
This castle, after several years of being a stronghold for royal clans, was renovated to its present appearance. New roofing and flooring were added while making sure the15th century feel and look is still evident. Great attention was extended to every single detail of the renovation to preserve the historical significance of the fortress.
Today, this castle opens up for the general public not merely for leisure but for education purpose, as well. This castle serves as host to some few Gaelic cultural evenings. Furthermore, this castle reveals loaded information about the history of the place which makes tourists understand and appreciate better Co. Donegal.
