Cobh, Co. Cork - Where History Abounds > View Cork articles
Cobh abounds in an abundant historical background being the point of embarkation to a great number of Irish people in search of a brighter and lighter state of life. The famine of the 18th century has brought an unstable past to Ireland and Cobh is one of the affected towns in Cork. Now that what happened is a mere history in itself, Cobh has made a remarkable transition as it now serves as a regular tourist spot.

This town is a great base to tour the neighboring islands since these are all connected with roads and bridges now. The Giant Island may be enough of a destination to some but for others who wish to explore more, the other islands are worth a visit. Not to miss spot here is the St. Coleman’s Cathedral overlooking Cobh. This church is considered as a heritage spot since its historical tradition dates back to the early 13th century. What make this cathedral quite distinct from the ordinary are its 47 bells – the largest of which weighs 3.5 tons.

One activity worth doing while in this town is a thrilling and exciting walk along the Titanic Trail. The legendary Titanic – the unsinkable ship – has this town as its last port of call before its tragic voyage. Tourists are taken into a relaxing walk along some streets and the port with great significant to this vessel. And for some who have a load of courage, the “Ghost Walk” awaits.

The ultimate way to discover Cobh – or Queenstown, as it was formerly called – is to visit the Cobh Heritage Center and catch the multimedia presentation of Cobh’s history or “The Queenstown Story” as they put it. Tourists may also go for a visit to some historical graveyards like the Lusitania grave and discover the end for some great men.

Ireland is known for golf and Cobh, Cork won’t be left out on this trendy sport. Ultimate tee time can well be spent at the Cobh Golf Club or the Fota Golf Club. And as fishing is great on the quaysides; so is sailing on the International Sailing Center.

And when does a tourist destination comes with no accommodation to go along with it? Never. True to this, Cobh’s vacation package comes with the most comfortable hotels to stay. Tourists will never have to look further enough for a day’s rest.
