The rich history of Co. Mayo has been captured in a number of museums and heritage centers scattered all around the county. There are more than enough of these facilities to satisfy anyone’s hunger for historical and heritage discovery and exploration. These spots bear proofs to Co. Mayo’s long gone years. If it weren’t for these museums – Mayo’s past may just be an idea which is hard to believe.
At Westport, tourists and history buffs will have their historical journey at the Westport Heritage Center and the Clew Bay Heritage Center. The Westport Heritage Center lies on James Street, Westport. It has in possession a number of photographs revealing the county’s interesting history. There is also a scale model of the town within the heritage center. The Clew Bay Heritage Center, on the other hand, represents the early times and major historical facts of Westport and Clew Bay. There are guided tours of the centre for better appreciation and exploration. The center itself is housed on a 19th century building.
Ballina holds out the North Heritage Center for its history-inclined tourists. The heritage center lies at Enniscoe, Castlehill, Ballina. The center holds on display some of the county’s relevant local farms and household remnants. This also serves as a genealogy center through its family history research – beneficial to those who would like to trace their Irish family history.
The town of Kiltimagh takes pride in its museum available to anyone who wishes to explore and uncover the town’s history. The Kiltimagh museum is housed in what used to be the Station area. The station area has once played a pivotal role in the town’s past and now it serves as the spot for the well visited museum. Kiltimagh museum is the home of great art collections, sculptures and famous works of the county’s proud sons – including Raftery, the famous blind poet.
The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life is housed at Castlebar. The Country Life Museum lies in Turlough Park at Castlebar. It has on display relevant remnants and artifacts depicting the early Irish country life. The museum holds out interesting displays that dates back as early as 1850. It has a variety of artifacts exhibited – fishing, agriculture, transport, tradition, culture, religion, and much more. Visitors to the Country Life are taken into a historical journey where they can relive the olden days and experience the early settlers’ way of life.
It pays to look back on the past for without it there will be no present. A history as interesting as Co. Mayo is an attraction in itself, and these museums and heritage centers are the venue for further exploration and appreciation.
