Charles Fort, Co. Cork - The Fortification > View Cork articles
Charles Fort is considered as a national monument due to its abundant historical significances. It has been an excellent fortification and stronghold during the turbulent times in the area. Tourists are amazed on the aerial view of the fort which appears to be of a star shape. This kind of fort structure has already been a legend in Ireland and it is truly amazing to see one that has survived up to these days.

This fort, as old as it is, takes its visitors to a feel of the long bygone era of its abundant history. The 16th century marked the structural beginning of Charles Fort. Reconstructed in 1677, this fort has been a refuge and strength of the governor – Sir Edward Scott – and his men during the Williamite War.

Charles Fort has five fortifying parts which spectacularly were known with names of their own. These parts are: Charles, Devil, North, Flagstaff and Cockpit. The strongest strongholds were the first two bastions. And the weakest points were the remaining three as they can be viewed from the higher ground.

During the Williamite war, Edward Scott and his men were convinced to walk out of the fort after agreeing on some amicable settlements. This fact adds more thrill to the Charles Fort. Tourists – especially those who treasure the past –will definitely love small bits of facts that this fort reveals.

Even if you are not a proclaimed history buff, Charles Fort is still an ideal spot for you to visit.
