Breaking the Limits of Cavan's Past > View Cavan articles
Co. Cavan is popularly considered as the lake county because of its 365 lakes. This county holds a relevant history worth reminiscing every time you set foot on its ground. It has established its own identity as an exciting destination to set your courses on if you plan for a getaway. It is full of interesting past that seems to be ironic with the name of the place. Cavan is from the word “ Cabh’an” which means hollow. But personally, I do not see any relevance to the “hollow” thing because for sure Cavan is overflowing with beauty and treasures.

If looking back at the ancient past lures your imagination and stirs up your emotion, then you don’t have to think twice. Find the answers for your curious mind at the Cavan County Museum. This home of artifacts and significant memoirs shelters the ultimate proof of Cavan’s glorious history, culture and tradition. Amidst the collection of historical specimens in this museum, you can establish a better understanding of the county.

The rich history of this county is magnificently captured in its ancient castles, as well. Feed yourself with an experience that is totally historical as you visit the Clough Oughter Castle which was built as early as the 13th century, Crover Castle which was put up in the 14th century, Tonymore Castle which was established in the 16th century. Just imagine the length of time these castles have survived. A visit to these ancient palaces will take you to a past-filled voyage. You might like the idea of grabbing someone over with you to share the “tour to past” moment.

This county is rich in prehistoric sites that will certainly make you feel you are disconnected from the present. The ancient secrets of these sites are yet to be revealed to you as you visit these places. You will certainly be amazed with the fact that these sites has been in their locations even before history began...long before people knew they are paving the way for the present.

Putting yourself in a situation where you divert from the present to linger on the past is a total expression of going beyond the limit of exploration and adventure. In Co. Cavan, this habit is not hindered but developed. This is the place where you can explore to your heart’s content.
