Ballyheigue - Kerry's Seaside Appeal > View Kerry articles
Ballyheigue is a charming seaside town in Co. Kerry, Ireland. The town, which name is Baile Ui Thaidhg in Irish translation, is set on a scenic location in Kerry. It offers a picturesque view of the ocean and the impressive mountains of the Dingle Peninsula. This seaside resort, in the southwest part of Ireland, holds out a never-ending appeal to tourists and locals alike.

The town of Ballyheigue comes synonymously with its beach. The Ballyheigue Beach has been a popular destination for romantic and family escapes. The beach is set on the Ballyheigue village and extends to Blackrock. This beach is regarded as a blue flag beach and lies on a designated area of Conservation. Its beauty is matchless and its appeal is endless.

Aside from its beach attraction, Ballyheigue is also known for its historical fortress, the Ballyheigue Castle. The castle reveals a great deal of the town’s history. The castle was built in 1810 and was burned twice on different dates, 1840 and 1921. To date, tourists can marvel at what remained of this majestic fortress. The remains have so much to say about Ballyheigue’s past, thus, a visit to the castle is more like a tour to the town’s history.

The Ballyheigue Castle now serves as an impressive backdrop for a remarkable golf course in the town. The Ballyheigue Castle Golf Club lies imposingly on the scenic and verdant area surrounding the heritage castle. The golf club offers a challenging course – enough to test the pros and challenge the beginners.

Other activities that can be enjoyed in Ballyheigue include fishing, diving, bird watching and walking. The areas around the KerryHead Peninsula are ideal spots for rock fishing. The Binn a Phoil and Binn a Gioba are excellent spots to catch a good number of mackerel. Divers will take pleasure in discovering the sunken ruins of an old church called the “Church beneath the Sea”. Tourists who want to catch a good view of rare bird species must head on to the Akearagh Lake. Some of the viewed bird genuses here include the Pectorial Piper, the Gadwall and the North American green-winged teal. Ballyheigue is also ideal for hill walking. There are several way marked routes to follow here.

Ballyheigue has an impressive number of hotels and accommodations made available for guests and tourists. These hotels are luxuriously set to suit the discerning tastes of the guests. They can be easily found as they are mostly set within or near the town center.

If walking along the sandy Ballyheigue Beach or teeing at Ballyheigue Castle Golf Club interests you, then there is no doubt you need to experience this coastal paradise in Co. Kerry, Ireland!
