The Aughnanure Castle is more than just a medieval fortress attraction. On its walls and ground lives a bygone history that can be well cherished by a mere visit to this castle. It lies accessibly on the Southeast of Oughterard.
This castle was originally built by the O’Flahertys, prominent figures of the medieval century. It enjoys a location close to the grand Lough Corrib. This is a six-storey tower with a remarkable structure and an unmatched surrounding view. A visit to this castle is worth a travel back to the medieval times since the feel of the past is very evident.
The Aughnanure Castle is a fine example of the traditional Irish tower houses. During the early centuries, this castle was a symbol of power and dominance. All of the six stories are majestically festooned and fortified. The living area on the third floor carries a delightful fireplace with two steeple rooms at the corners. The fourth floor served as the sleeping area and contains a secret vault. The fifth floor, on the other hand, holds a hall with mullioned windows.
Visitors to this castle today will have the privilege of touring what remained of this once glorious fortress. After centuries of grandeur, the Aughnanure Castle diminished. There are still some significant remains that bear out the castles history and carry on with it, Ireland’s past in general. Guests will be taken to view what survived on the banqueting hall, the watch tower, the double bawn, and the dry harbour.
Aughnanure Castle’s name was taken from the Irish word Achadh na n-Iubhar which means the Field of Yews. This is due to the fact that it is set on a woodland abounding in numerous Yew trees. This even added more charm to the setting of the castle.
There are guided tours to the Aughnanure Castle. These tours will take guests to the entire splendor of the castle’s remains. These are excellent ways to enjoy all of the castle’s enticements.
