Although the Skibbereen, in itself, is enough to be an attraction, the most prevalent reason why most travelers keep coming back to this town in Cork is the traditional, old-fashioned atmosphere which is very distinct and extremely pleasing especially nowadays when almost all things lost its original beauty and are replaced with modernism. Despite the advancement of commercialism, the town managed to keep its traditional local friendly feel. No matter what country you are from, you will certainly feel one step closer to home because of the warm and accommodating people of Skibbereen.
Europe’s largest sea-water lake and the most intriguing point of attraction in Skibbereen is the Lough Hyne. This lough is surprisingly, almost, all the time warmer than the natural sea water and is a habitat of atypical marine life usually just found in the Mediterranean.
Taking into consideration the town’s history, more than 10,000 victims of the Irish famine in the 18th century died and were buried in Abbetstrewery. Witness this great famine account only at Skibbereen Heritage Centre where the past is depicted though multi media presentations. On the lighter side, two of the most alluring gardens in West Cork greet you in this town, Lissard Gardens and the Creagh Gardens. Both are enchanting venues to appreciate nature.
Being West Cork’s capital town, Skibbereen is known for its mouth watering delectable cookery. Its time to treat yourself with some real good food sourced fresh and crisp from the finest farmlands and crystal clear seas only a short distance away. There is no other place in Cork where you can get a taste of the freshest ingredients for a sumptuous meal than this town.
Almost everywhere in Ireland, each town boasts of its unique golf event. At Skibbereen, playing golf is as much pleasure as it is a challenge. Also popular sport in this town is the salmon and sea-trout game fishing at the River Ilen. This beauteous river has been a cozy abode for fishes of wide variety. If you want to try other sports, the place to go is the Skibbereen Sports Centre where they offer tournaments and classes for badminton, volleyball, bowling, aerobics, basketball, soccer and even tae kwon do.
When you go on a holiday trip, pick the most unique, inviting, and enjoying place in town. Pick Skibberreen and you will surely be coming back for more.
