Co. Mayo, Ireland is a county shaped by history. The glorious past it has been through is a timeless masterpiece of existence which can still be cherished to these days. There are excellent historical sites worth a visit while at this county.

The Westport House is an 18th century home that has significant historical background worth reliving time and again. This house was built by the Browne’s family and was the home of the Marquess of Sligo. Apart from the historical emphasis of the house, there are amazing natural wonders to explore within and around it. The house was opened to the public and since its opening, millions of visitors have experienced its allure.

Co. Mayo is also the home of a historic tower house which is commonly known as the Rockfleet Castle or the Carrickahowley Castle. The name Grace O’Malley is always attached to this castle. O’Malley is a well known historical name in terms of maritime exploits. She has made the castle her abode during the 16th century.

The Old Coastguard Station which served as home to a number of coastguard families in the year between the years 1879-1921. The Old Coastguard Station is on a continuous process of restoring and reviving the coastguard heritage of the bygone era.

Co. Mayo is a county bounded by religion as attested by its early churches and settlements. One that will surely catch tourists’ attention is the Rosserk Abbey that lies on the scenic town of Ballina. The Abbey was once the home of the Third Order Franciscans as founded by St. Francis of Assisi. The Third Order, which may be unfamiliar to some, is composed of friars and laymen. The abbey’s significance diminished during the Reformation period when monasteries and friaries have to be closed. To date, tourists and locals can enjoy the remains of the abbey just along the west side of Killala Bay. There are significant remnants that serve as proof to Mayo’s religious beliefs and spirits here.

One of the major historical sites in Co. Mayo is the Christchurch Castlebar. The church lies on the renowned “The Mall”, a tree-lined boulevard. Christchurch has a rich history that dates back as far as 1739. This is a well visited spot in Co. Mayo not merely for its religious function but also for its historical significance.
